About the Kline School of Law

Drexel University’s Kline School of Law delivers innovative legal education best suited for competitive and compassionate people.

We’ve got a flexible curriculum, exceptional experiential learning opportunities, and faculty and staff who are uncommonly committed to student success. That includes our Career Strategies team, who are with students from day one. Thanks in part to their leadership, year after year Kline Law’s employment results are among the best in the country for full-time, long-term positions that require a JD or for which a JD is preferred.

Although we’re not deeply invested in rankings, that we’ve advanced 49 places in U.S. News & World Report since 2016 tells you something about our law school and the direction we’re headed. Join us!

JD Program Features

Curriculum

Follow the path that was meant for you. With our students in mind, we’ve designed a curriculum that’s uniquely flexible to allow you to explore the legal topics you’re passionate about on your terms, with a mix of online and on-campus classes. Our JD program can be completed in two or three years, with start dates in the summer and fall.

Faculty

Learn from the best. Kline School of Law professors are top legal scholars and practitioners who are as eager to help students navigate the legal community as they are to explain the fine points of law. It’s not unusual for our faculty and students to collaborate on briefs, reports, scholarly articles and books.

Experiential Education

Experiential education at Kline is second to none. Unlike externships at most schools, Kline co-ops immerse you in the practice of law by allowing you to work up to 40 hours a week for academic credit. Our placements are not limited to non-profit and government settings, so you can gain valuable experience at a big firm or commercial enterprise in Philadelphia or back home.

Career Strategies

No detail is too small when it comes to your career. Our nationally respected Career Strategies team provides guidance on everything from how to find jobs that align with your strengths and interests to what to wear for interviews. Their understanding of the legal job market, along with Kline’s highly engaged alumni network, will help you establish and advance your career in law.

Areas of Study

At Kline, you can tailor your coursework to reach your goals. Here are some of the areas of study we offer.

View Descriptions

Criminal Law

You’ll gain a strong theoretical and experiential foundation to prepare you for your career in criminal law. Gain insight from Kline faculty whose litigation experience informs their expertise in criminal theory and civil rights.

Health Law

Our Health Law program will prepare you for legal practice in the increasingly complex field of health law. Courses explore everything from major health law policy to the philosophical and ethical underpinnings of the healthcare system. If you wish to deepen your understanding of public health further, consider our JD-MPH joint degree with Drexel’s impressive Dornsife School of Public Health.

Business and Entrepreneurship

Through the Business and Entrepreneurship Law program, you’ll have a chance to master the doctrine of business law. Put what you learn from courses on entrepreneurship and technology, e-commerce law, transactional lawyering and intellectual property into practice while advising Philadelphia businesses through our Entrepreneurial Law Clinic. We also offer a JD-MBA joint degree with Drexel’s LeBow College of Business.

Cyber Law and Policy

Our courses in cyber law and privacy will teach you about the framework regulating data as a currency and commodity. You will learn about cyber laws and privacy concerns related to medical records, technology such as cloud computing, and big data and the Internet of Things. You will have the chance to compare how the U.S. and international bodies such as the European Union approach these increasingly complex issues.

Intellectual Property

The Intellectual Property program was born out of the recent development of novel technologies and new media. In the concentration, you will learn how, as an IP expert, you will be called upon to secure, regulate, and litigate the rights which stem from this technological innovation. You will complete a series of courses and experiential education opportunities that have been designed to provide both a depth of substantive knowledge and a breadth of experience with practical skills and IP law practice settings.

Social Policy and Action

While taking courses on social policy and action, you’ll learn how law succeeds and fails in bringing about change related to individual and group rights. You will learn to contextualize movements for legal and social change throughout history and analyze the effectiveness of the strategies employed in these movements.

Civil Rights

In our civil rights courses, you’ll explore both the principles of civil rights law and the practice through historical and current developments. You’ll learn how to create litigation strategies for cases related to civil rights matters. Faculty will show you how to identify relevant court motions and teach you best practices in preparing for trial.

Public Interest

If public interest law is your goal, our aim is to equip you to be practice-ready by graduation. You’ll take courses exploring the theoretical and historical underpinnings of public interest law and you’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through our co-ops and clinics. We offer a public interest scholarship for five students who have demonstrated a commitment to advocacy.

Law and Psychology

We’re home to the only fully integrated JD-PhD in Law and Clinical Psychology program offered at a single university in the United States. This joint-degree program will allow you to bridge the gap between law, which aims to settle problems requiring immediate resolution, and psychology, which examines problems through an empirical lens without the aim of ending in a verdict.

International Law

In our international law courses, you’ll examine the role international organizations play in developing and enforcing laws on human rights, international trade and military force. You’ll explore the ways in which international law is applied abroad as well as within the United States.

Immigration Law

In our immigration law courses, you’ll learn how to navigate the relationship between the law and each point in the immigration process in order to assist your future clients. You will gain in-depth understanding of the theory underpinning immigration law, including theory related to asylum and refugee status, citizenship, the visa system, and administrative and judicial review.

Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution

Our Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution program intensively trains students in litigation theory, practical skills and other related matters, such as ethical responsibility and establishing client-attorney trust. Additionally, our moot court and mock trial teams are among the best in the nation.

“What stands out to me about Drexel Kline law graduates is not only the academic and intellectual capability they bring to the practice of law, but the distinctly business-focused instincts and perspectives they hone with a Kline law education. Put simply, a Kline graduate possesses a lawyer’s skills and an entrepreneur’s soul.”

— Ajay Raju, Chairman and CEO, Raju LLP

“Fighting to change the criminal legal system is tough work. The Kline School of Law gave me powerful tools that I use every day.”

— Jess Farris, ’12, Director of Criminal Justice/Policy and Advocacy Counsel for the ACLU of Southern California

“As a former pre-med student, I started law school without a clear career in mind. The school gave me numerous chances to gain practical experience and create my own story. I’m really looking forward to working in the Trust Company at Goldman Sachs.”
