Job Description

Job Description:

The Rincliffe Gallery Exhibition Graphic Designer will create the environmental and marketing graphics for the upcoming exhibition in the Rincliffe Gallery: Building Men: Philadelphia College Students as WWI Military Engineers, curated by student-curator, Emma Johnson, History ’25, and set to open August 14, 2025. They will work closely with the curator and director of the Founding Collection to design the look and feel of the exhibition creating thematic design elements that build an informative and inviting atmosphere within the exhibition.

Design materials include Facebook and Instagram ads, 5”w x 8”h exhibition flyer, website banner, exhibition panels including 5 primary panels, 17 secondary/tertiary panels, and 29 object labels, plus the title lettering, acknowledgements, and wall graphics for the exhibition.

Exhibition Description:

Building Men: Philadelphia College Students as WWI Military Engineers is an exhibition that will be displayed in the Rincliffe Gallery in Drexel’s Main Building featuring artifacts from various collections, including the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel, the Drexel Founding Collection, and the archives of the 103rd Engineer Battalion Armory. Along with an array of related artifacts, the exhibition also features photographs and sketches from local members of the American Expeditionary Force on the ground in France. Aiming to foster connections between current college students and the university population of Philadelphia during World War I, this exhibition draws from the military career of a young corporal, Edward Shenton (who was also an artist) and the changes that universities—such as Drexel—were making to encourage young people’s involvement in the War. The often-unrecognized work of military engineers is a particular focus of this exhibition; Shenton and many other college-aged men joined the ranks of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 103rd Engineer Battalion—at the Armory located on Drexel’s campus at 32nd and Lancaster.

The Rincliffe Gallery, located in Drexel’s Main Building, hosts rotating, student-curated exhibitions twice a year, with exhibitions running Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with curator and director on exhibition themes and provide two to three design option templates for the exhibition that the curator can select from;
  • Design, package and arrange printing, with help from director, for large and small scale exhibition graphics;
  • Two rounds of graphic edits;
  • Assist with the layout and installation of graphics;
  • Create marketing materials for exhibition and website;
  • Provide all design materials, linked images, fonts, etc., to director of Founding Collection.
