Student Competition Rules

Please keep in mind that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all events are subject to change, cancellation, or relocation as federal, state, and local guidelines evolve. For the most up-to-date information, visit the Drexel University Coronavirus Website.

Homecoming includes a week of student competitions where all Drexel Dragons are invited to compete in the week's events. Learn more about the events below. Prizes

Each event will have a gold, silver, and bronze medal team winner. In addition, participating teams will have a chance to win first, second, or third place in the weeklong competition. The final awards will be given during halftime at the Men's Basketball game on January 22*.

  • First Place – $1,000 in DragonCard Dollars to be split between team members
  • Second Place – $500 DragonCard Dollars to be split between team members
  • Third Place – $250 DragonCard Dollars to be split between team members

*A minimum of four members and maximum of 15 must be present at the time of the award distribution for the team to receive the prize in full.

Captains Meeting

Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 7 p.m.
Location: Virtual, via Zoom

The Captain's Meeting is a mandatory pre-event meeting which covers the rules, policies, and procedures for all of the Homecoming competitions. Each team must be represented to be eligible for participation throughout the Homecoming Student Competition. Team rosters must be finalized following the meeting on January 13 by 11:59pm. For any questions regarding the Captains Meeting, please email Zach Apt at zaa28@drexel.edu.

Overarching Competition Rules

  • Teams must have a minimum of four members.
  • Team members may compete in multiple competitions during the week, although we encourage the captain to have all team members participate in at least one event.
  • You MAY NOT be a member of multiple teams!
  • Current University COVID-19 guidelines must be followed during all parts of competition. Please reference the Drexel coronavirus website for the most up-to-date information.
  • Designs, performances, acts, general event behavior, etc. should be tasteful and not include obscene language or offensive imagery. This includes, but is not limited to, racial, ethnic, or sexual orientation slurs.
  • Designs, performances, acts, general event behavior, etc. may not reference or contain images of alcohol, drugs, nudity, or explicit sexual content.
  • No team member during any event should be found disrespecting and/or arguing with any judges, hosts, students, or professional staff. If you have questions or concerns during or after the event, you may address them to Coordinator of Intramural Sports Zach Apt at zaa28@drexel.edu or Student Organization Financial Advisor Becca Hartman at rks73@drexel.edu.
  • Failure to comply with any of the above rules may result in disqualification.
  • Teams are expected to represent the University in a positive manner. All University policies and standards are to be understood and followed.
  • All individuals participating in Student Competition events are subject to the Drexel University Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards handbook. Any issue of harassment, violence, disorderly conduct, or detrimental behavior will be reported and handled according to University protocol.

Spirit Points

Spirit points will be awarded to team members throughout the week and will be counted toward a team's overall score.

  • Eligible events include MLK Service Week Scavenger Hunt, Bonfire, Variety Show, Quizzo, and the Men's Basketball game.
  • Having four or more people with Drexel gear/swag visible during an event.

Window Decorating

Friday, January 14 through Wednesday, January 19
Location: Rec Center Lobby

Check-In Process

  • Teams must be confirmed through the Homecoming Team Sign Up form on DragonLink.
  • After the Captain's Meeting, groups can stop by the front desk of the Rec Center anytime during normal operational hours to pick up supplies and choose a window. Window decorating cannot take place before 3:30pm on Saturday, January 15 or Sunday, January 16. All designs must be completed before the building closes on Wednesday, January 19.

Rules

  • The Drexel University community will evaluate and judge the window paintings throughout Homecoming week (January 17–21). Community members may vote once by visiting the front desk of the Rec Center before the votes are collected and counted at the end of the business day — 5 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022.
  • The Drexel University Homecoming Committee will also use the scoring system below to give a separate score to each painting that will be included in the teams' final Homecoming score.
  • All painting materials will be provided by the Homecoming Committee.
  • Participants/groups are not permitted to use their own materials.
  • Painting on any other window will result in loss of opportunity to participate and be given negative points to their overall score.
  • Every effort should be made to not get any paint on the walls or other areas around the assigned window.
  • Any cost to clean up the area around your window will be charged to your organization.
  • Windows will be selected on a first come, first served basis.
  • The team must be entered in the overall Spirit Week competition.

Scoring

Points will be awarded based on the scoring criteria below:

  • Craftsmanship: 20 points
    • Neatly executed designs
    • Use of basic design elements
  • Creativity: 30 points
    • Original design
    • Creative use of space given
  • Drexel Spirit: 50 points
    • Use of Drexel University in design
    • Representing Drexel in a positive way

Total Points Available: 100 points

Fan Favorite

The team with the most votes will be awarded 25 points, 2nd most will be awarded 15 points, and 3rd most will be awarded 10 points.

MLK Service Week Scavenger Hunt

Monday, January 17–Friday, January 21
Location: GooseChase App

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service falls on January 17 and will be the 27th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates Dr. King's Legacy. Join the MLK Scavenger Hunt GooseChase game with your Homecoming team and participate in a variety of service activities throughout the week to celebrate Dr. King, as well as other missions to earn points towards becoming the 2022 Homecoming winner. Be sure to stay tuned in throughout the week for different missions that may pop up!

Registration

  • Teams must be confirmed through the Homecoming Team Sign Up form on DragonLink.
  • Download the GooseChase app.
  • Enter game code: XDVM3B

Rules

  • You must join your Student Competition team through GooseChase to earn Homecoming points.
  • All submissions must be received within the MLK GooseChase game prior to the game ending.
  • To complete a mission, select it from the list and follow the instructions to receive the allotted points. Sometimes you'll be submitting a photo or video, while other times you'll be solving a puzzle or riddle.
  • While the game will assign points right away, all submissions are subject to review by the Homecoming Committee.
  • Bonus points may be assigned if your submission is extra impressive or creative. The Homecoming Committee will be watching behind the scenes and can assign points to any submission for any reason.
  • Points may be deducted for submissions which violate any Homecoming rules.

Bonfire

Tuesday, January 18 at 6 p.m.
Location: Race Street Lawn

Kickoff the Homecoming Student Competition with the annual bonfire! Warm up by the fire, roast s'mores, and network with your fellow Dragons.

Check-in Process

  • Members must sign in at the designated table by 7:30 p.m. to be eligible for spirit points.
  • Teams must be confirmed through the Homecoming Team Sign Up form on DragonLink.

Variety Show

Thursday, January 20 at 8 p.m.
Location: Mitchell Auditorium

Participants will provide videos showcasing their talents in this Homecoming Student Competition event. Even if you're not in the show, this will be an event you don't want to miss. In addition to the judge's choice, be sure you're there to cast your vote as part of the Fan Favorite. Examples of potential acts: Original song performances, skit, performance of talent (such as jump roping or yo-yoing), etc.

Check-In Process

  • Check in is available 7:15 p.m.
  • Teams must come with all participating members to the check-in table no later than 7:45 p.m.
  • Teams must be confirmed through the Homecoming Team Sign Up form on DragonLink.

Rules

  • Entering Music (if needed)
    • Music must be sent via email in an easily readable file by Tuesday, January 18 by 12pm to rks73@drexel.edu.
    • The email should be labeled as "Homecoming Student Competition Variety Show – (Team Name)"; if it is not sent as such, your team may be disqualified.
    • In the email, please mention the time frames you want music played; may be no more than five minutes in length.
    • Your track can be a mashup of songs.
  • Your performance can be no longer than five minutes. (NOTE: This may be adjusted depending on the number of teams that sign up.)
  • Participants must stay in the designated area on the stage during their performance.
  • Performers cannot pull people from the crowd.
  • Performers cannot throw things into the audience.
  • No obscene language or profanity may be used. This includes, but is not limited to, racial, ethnic, or sexual-orientation slurs.
  • All performers must be registered and current Drexel students.
  • All performing team members should be there for the entirety of the event.

Friday, January 21 at 8 p.m.

Check-In Process

  • Teams must be confirmed through the Homecoming Team Sign Up form on Dragonlink.
  • Participants should sign in 10 minutes prior to the start of the event .

Rules

  • Teams will be given points and counted as participating via writing their team name appropriately on their score sheets each round.
  • Teams can have 4-10 members per Quizzo team.
  • No cell phones can be used during rounds; if a team is caught with phones, they will be penalized. Points may be deducted; or, if it is a reoccurring issue with the team, they may become disqualified.
  • Only one official team per Homecoming team can be entered for the game.
    • Additional teams may be made for fun, but points will not be counted towards the team's Homecoming Student Competition score.
    • If your team makes an unofficial team, that group may not use the official team name or anything in its likeness.
    • If additional teams are made, the team being scored must be designated prior to the start of the game
  • No team members should be arguing with the host at any time. Arguing may result in disqualification of the team from this event.

Homecoming Basketball Game

Saturday, January 22 at 2 p.m
Daskalakis Athletic Center

Men's Basketball will take on William & Mary during the Homecoming game, be sure to represent your Homecoming team while cheering on the team for a win! Homecoming team winners will be announced during halftime of the game. The Homecoming Basketball Game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Philly+ and FloSports, and you are encouraged tune in or come out and show off your Drexel pride.
