Goodwin College of Professional Studies Keynote Speaker

Marilou Watson, RPH, JD

Marilou Watson

Co-Chair of the Life Sciences Practice at the national law firm of Fox Rothschild LLP, Marilou Watson is an accomplished intellectual property attorney who leverages degrees in pharmacy and biology to help major chemical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry clients capitalize on and protect their most valuable assets – their ideas. A former pharmaceutical researcher and in-house patent attorney, Marilou assists clients with patent prosecution, infringement analysis and patent invalidity and freedom-to-operate studies, as well as licensing, due diligence and divestiture matters in the chemical and pharmaceutical arts.

Through her work on the Drexel University Goodwin College Advisory Board and the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders via the U.S. State Department, Marilou invests time, legal knowledge, and resources in supporting projects aimed at improving the lives of others, particularly people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Her work has included supporting a drive to provide food aid to struggling villages and an internship program for young girls in South Sudan and the launch of a pre- and post-natal clinic in a remote area of Ghana.

Dedicated to community service, Marilou mentors multiple students, aspiring lawyers and new attorneys who come to her through a variety of avenues including the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group, Fox Rothschild’s Summer Associate program and the Montgomery Bar Association’s internship program for first-year law students. A strong advocate for public education, she is the creator of the Montgomery Bar Association’s award-winning Day in Court Program, which provides high school students from diverse backgrounds an up-close, in-person look at the legal system and an introduction to careers in the profession. She also previously served since 2008 on the Pennsylvania’s Early Learning Investment Commission.

Marilou is the recipient of multiple professional and community honors over the past several years, including more recently the Montgomery Bar Association’s 2019 Honorable Horace A. Davenport Diversity Award. She was also named a 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award winner by Philadelphia’s Legal Intelligencer newspaper, a 2020 Minority Business Leader by the Philadelphia Business Journal, and a 2021 “IP Star” by Managing Intellectual Property magazine.
