What is General Studies?

General Studies is an academic field that provides students with a breadth of knowledge across disciplines and depth into specific areas of personal interest. Having a range of interests and a desire to explore emerging areas of expertise can help students preserve multiple career options. What are the admission requirements into the General Studies degree program?

Although each student’s application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, Drexel University Admissions does require students to have 24 previous college credits, and a minimum 2.5 college GPA.

Will all of my credits transfer into the General Studies program?

Credit transfers are done on a course-by-course basis, and can vary from program to program. Only grades of “C” or above will be considered for transfer (a “C-” is not transferable). The General Studies program is, however, a transfer-friendly program, allowing for a sizeable number of credits to be brought in as electives.

When should I apply to the BS in General Studies program?

The BS in General Studies enrolls new students during each quarter of the Drexel School year. The latest application deadlines can be found under the Transfer Deadlines & Critical Dates section of the Drexel Application Deadlines page.

How will I know which General Studies courses I will need to register?

All General Studies students are assigned an academic advisor. All new students must register through their advisor for their first term. Additionally, all students are provided with a curriculum guide so that they may track their academic progress through to graduation.

What if I have not attended school for a number of years? What services are provided to new students?

All students are assigned an academic advisor to help them navigate through their academic career. Also, all General Studies students are required to take CAT 200 Strategies for Lifelong Learning, a course that aids new and returning students with re-adjusting to the demands of college.

Do I have to attend full-time?

You can enroll in the BS in General Studies as a full- or part-time student. The majority of students in Drexel's BS in General Studies program complete their studies on a part-time basis to balance career, family care and personal needs.

How rigorous is the BS in General Studies?

The BS in General Studies helps students prepare for a variety of future endeavors, be it professional or academic. The program requires a high level of self-direction, supported by the guidance of an academic advisor. All students are required to incorporate upper-level courses and writing-intensive courses into their curriculum, as per University guidelines.

How long will it take me to finish my General Studies degree?

This answer varies from student to student. It depends on both the number of credits a student transfers into the program, and the number of courses a student takes per term. However, the flexibility of General Studies typically allows students to complete the degree in less time and for less money than other degree programs.

In which delivery formats is the BS in General Studies program available?

Students can earn their degree taking courses on campus or as part of our online program.
