SARI-Drexel-ShanghaiTech Jointly Organized International Workshop on Energy and Environment: Challenges and Opportunities

November 3, 2014

November 3-5, 2014:  A team of interdisciplinary Drexel researchers participated in the jointly organized SARI-Drexel-ShanghaiTech International Workshop on Energy and Environment: Challenges and Opportunities in Shanghai, China. The workshop  hosted at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), demonstrates the role  that the Drexel-SARI Center plays in highlighting critical global challenges facing both the US and China, such as energy and the environment, and in deepening and expanding research collaborations to meet these challenges.

The workshop began with opening remarks from Dr. Wei Sun, Albert Soffa Chair Professor, Drexel University, College of Engineering and Director of the Drexel-SARI Center, Dr. Songlin Feng, President, SARI-CAS, Dr. Julie Mostov, Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, Drexel, and Dr. Jinkang Gong, Vice President, ShanghaiTech University.  The workshop included four keynote presentations:  “Low Carbon Energy Solutions in China,” by Vice President Yuhan Sun and Dr. Zhiyong Tang of SARI-CAS, “The North American Energy Revolution” by Dr. Joseph Hughes, Dean of Drexel’s College of Engineering, “City intelligent energy network and its demonstration,” by Vice President Weiguang Huang, SARI-CAS, and “Reinventing urban wastewater management in cities for resource recovery – A US Perspective,” by Dr. Chuck Haas, LD Betz Professor of Environmental Engineering and Head of Drexel’s Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering.

The workshop also incorporated a variety of presentations featuring innovative research in the area of energy and environment by faculty from all three institutions, as well as reports on on-going joint research projects, linking SARI and Drexel faculty and graduate students. One of the joint research projects, on Smart Cities was presented by Dr. Longjian Liu (Drexel) and Dr. Mingquan Wang  (SARI). This project also involves a number of other Drexel faculty, of whom Dr. Chuck Haas, Dr. Shannon Marquez, and Dr. Jin Wen, participated in the workshop. Dr. Frank Ji (Drexel) and Dr. Wei Wei (SARI) also presented their on-going project.   The participants continued their discussions during breakout sessions organized around areas of research expertise. In addition to SARI and Drexel faculty, workshop participants included colleagues from ShanghaiTech and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Drexel also hosted a workshop reception and engineering alumni event in the Drexel-SARI Joint Center. Workshop participants were able to meet Drexel alumni living in China to learn about their career achievements in the field of engineering. Finally, the workshop ended with a tour of ShanghaiTech’s new facilities and growing campus, right next to SARI.  Drexel alumnus, Dr. Mianheng Jiang is the founding President of ShanghaiTech.

The workshop and subsequent meetings among faculty created opportunities for exploring additional avenues of cooperation and enhanced collaboration between Drexel and partner academic institutions in Shanghai, including more opportunities for research co-ops and student engagement.

The full list of Drexel University participants include: Dr. Chuck Haas, Dean Joseph Hughes, Dr. Frank Ji Dr. Wen Jin, Dr. Goran Karapetrov, Dr. Christopher Li, Dr. Longjian Liu, Dr. Shannon Marquez, Dr. Julie Mostov, and Dr. Wei Sun.
