On April 22nd 2013, the Office of International Programs hosted our quarterly Cross Country Conversation event. This spring's event was titled Becoming American and focused on the themes, issues, and laws surrounding the immigrant experience. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Gabriella Ibieta, led a diverse group of students comprised of domestic and international students in a stimulating panel discussion. Each of our panelists had a unique story to share and shed a different perspective on the situation of immigration in the U.S. Along with Dr. Ibieta, these panelists discussed themes of diaspora, assimilation, culture, and integration. Dr. Mostov, the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, shed some light on misconceptions surrounding international students studying at U.S. universities.
Of course, the immigration system in the U.S. is not perfect and many of the themes the panelists touched on fell in line with the previous week's Collective Day of Action event. These country wide university held events, "Universities for Immigration Reform," discussed the legal pitfalls of the system and the changes that can be made personally and politically to rectify the issues.
