Global Engagement Funding

The competitive Global Engagement Funding (GEF) program (formerly known as International Experience Funding or IEF) provides financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff participating in international experiences. Examples of qualifying experiences include, but are not limited to, international research, international service trips, visits to Drexel partner institutions or partnership development visits.

Please note, the following experiences do not qualify for global engagement funding:

  • Faculty and graduate students presenting at international conferences
  • Students participating in a long- or short-term study abroad program

Faculty and students who are taking part in these experiences should instead apply for an International Presentation AwardStudy Abroad scholarship, or Intensive Course Abroad seed funding (please consult with Ahaji Schreffler,, regarding availability for new Intensive Courses Abroad).


Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but must be submitted at least one month prior to the date of departure.

How to Apply

We recommend preparing all requirements prior to beginning the online application. Questions about the application process should be directed to the Office of Global Engagement at A complete application includes:

  1. Application form and travel budget (with the signature of dean or department head);
  2. Application statement;
  3. Trip itinerary;
  4. Proof of proper registration with the appropriate office: (sample proof for faculty/staff) (sample proof for students)
  • Faculty: Registration in the GRAND database 
  • International co-op students: Registration with international co-op advisor
  • All other student experiences: Registration with Drexel Study Abroad (begin the process by emailing with your name, travel dates, city and country where you will be, and reason for travel)

Preference will be given to proposals which:

  • Document commitment of funding and support from other institutional sources;
  • Demonstrate a significant impact on the research and academic career of the applicant(s);
  • Connect to Drexel’s strategic global initiatives;
  • Have a clear potential to yield long-term ties between Drexel and scholars, organizations, or educational institutions outside of the United States (these applications shall be given particularly positive consideration)

  • Students must register all international travel with the Study Abroad office. Students may begin the process by emailing with your name, travel dates, city and country where you will be, and reason for travel.
  • Faculty must enter their travel plans into their GRAND profile (faculty without a GRAND profile will have to create one first).
