Tim Beck

Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Pre-doctoral Fellowship, 2015

Medicine/Molecular & Cellular Biology and Genetics PhD, 2016; MD, 2018

During his post-baccalaureate studies Tim Beck spent extensive time working on organic synthesis schemes in Dr. Monika Konaklieva’s laboratory at American University. The focus of our research was on the synthesis of novel anti-microbial compounds. Their synthesized compounds were tested against M. tuberculosis in Dr. Clifton Barry III’s laboratory at the NIAID, yielding promising results. His pre-doctoral mentor and sponsor, Dr. Erica Golemis, is a well-established leader at Fox Chase Cancer Center, with expertise in cancer cell signaling, protein-protein interactions and cancer genetics. Dr. Golemis’ laboratory excels at studying protein-protein interactions and elucidating novel cellular mechanisms. His long-term career goals are to become a physician-scientist, specializing in oncology, with a research focus on development and improvement of cancer therapies. His research proposal and training plan have been developed to prepare him for these goals, and particularly for the advancement of translational medicine and personalized medicine, by providing a strong foundation in cancer biology and cancer therapeutics.
