Michelle Torelli

Drexel Faculty Mentors: Yury Gogotsi, Sabrina Spatari, and Giuseppe Palmese

Michelle is a first-generation Argentine-American college student and Liberty Scholar recipient who hopes to couple her chemical and environmental engineering studies to solve global environmental and energy challenges. Through the STAR program, she studied Lithium-ion battery storage of MXene composites which led her to publish a scientific journal article in Nano Energy. Michelle was the recipient of the Dept. of Energy Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education fellowship as a co-op at the Dept. of Defense U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Here, she developed novel fluid formulations for various military and commercial applications as well as published a government limited-distribution article. Since then, she has completed internships and co-op rotations at The Boeing Company, Intel Corporation, and ExxonMobil Corporation, with projects and responsibilities ranging from the International Space Station (NASA) to facilitating projects overseas. In addition to her industry experience, she has completed M.Sc. research in Belgium as a visiting scholar at the Universiteit Antwerpen. Michelle has held multiple leadership roles in AIChE, SHPE, and LOFT and is currently a mentor for Liberty Scholars and a STEM tutor for LS-AMP. She is interested in expanding her mentorship services to include future generations of potential engineers from diverse backgrounds, specifically students of traditionally disadvantaged communities.
