St Andrews Society McNeil Scholarship, 2020-21

BA Anthopology '21

As an anthropology major, I have a great passion for learning about different cultures and understanding differences between them. It is my hope that this experience as a McNeil Scholarship recipient will provide me with new perspectives in which to view the world with. While studying at the University of Aberdeen, I am looking to expand on what I have learned and take archaeology courses that allow me to participate in hands-on excavation sites. I currently volunteer at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology working with artifacts from prehistoric, pre-contact Native American mound sites in the Mississippi region. This coming spring/summer terms I will be doing my first and only co-op at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center as a research assistant training working dogs in search and rescue as well as scent detection of ovarian cancer, artifacts, and more, which will give me experience in conducting research. On campus, I serve on the executive board of the Taiwanese Student Association as finance director.

I have always wanted to study abroad, and this opportunity will be my second time studying abroad while at Drexel. I first did an independent study abroad in Amman, Jordan during the summer of 2018, in which I took an intensive Arabic course. I have always wanted to travel to Scotland as that is where my father’s family is from, and I am so incredibly grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity to explore and study in this beautiful country.
