About the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship is a prestigious award that supports research-oriented students in a range of STEM and social science fields during their first three years of graduate school. The award provides $46,000/year ($34,000 stipend + $12,000 Cost of Education Allowance), international research and internship opportunities, and more to support future knowledge experts with the potential to contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering.

To be eligible, applicants must be either rising seniors (including 4th year BS/MS) or 1st year or 2nd year graduate students, plan on a PhD/research-oriented career, and be US Citizens or Permanent Residents. The NSF welcome applications from all qualified individuals. Women, minorities and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Fellows receive:**

  • A three-year annual stipend of $34,000/year 
  • A $12,000 education allowance for tuition & fees, tenable at any accredited US institution
  • Opportunities for international research and professional development
  • The increased freedom that comes with having your own graduate funds

Applying for the NSF GRFP at Drexel

The Fellowships Office supports Drexel students who are applying – or thinking about applying – for a NSF-GRFP in a variety of ways, including resources, workshops, faculty review, and more.

To submit essays for anonymous internal review, complete an NSF GRFP Campus Review form and upload drafts of both essays in a single document by the deadline above.


NSF GRFP Application Workshops

These two-part sessions will provide an overview of the NSF GRFP, tips from recipients and faculty reviewers, and hands-on writing exercises to help you get started on the application essays. Participants should bring a brief summary of their proposed graduate research to the workshop.

Workshop participants will receive access to sample essays, worksheets, and supporting materials - and - may request one-hour feedback and advising meetings with Fellowships Office advisors. Please watch the short webinar above or review the NSF GRFP website before attending an application workshop to gain a basic understanding of the program.

NSF GRFP Merit Review Panel
