The Goldwater Scholarship is a highly prestigious national award that recognizes the nation’s top STEM undergraduates. Awardees receive funds for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to $7,500 annually, renewable up to two years.

Who should apply?

The Goldwater program is looking for students with the talent, passion, and preparation to become leading researchers in STEM fields.

To be eligible, you must:

  • be a US citizen
  • be enrolled full-time with a STEM major
  • have minimum 3.0 GPA
  • plan to graduate in 2016 or 2017
  • be nominated by your home institution (details below)

The Goldwater Scholarship was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers and foster excellence in STEM fields.

Goldwater Scholars typically have:

  • GPA above 3.8
  • Strong research experience
  • A record of publishing and/or presenting their research at conferences
  • Plans to pursue advanced degrees, usually the PhD(*)
  • Vision and commitment to pursuing research career in your field

* Note that students who plan to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a practicing physician.

Applying for the Goldwater Scholarship

To apply for this award, you must be nominated by Drexel University. We hold an open campus competition for nomination beginning in October.

Applying for nomination involves a few steps:

Step 1: Get Ready

Attend an info session and/or sign up for the Fellowships Blackboard Site to learn more about the Goldwater Scholarship.

Step 2: Submit a Pre-Application

Drexel’s Goldwater Nominating Committee, composed of STEM faculty and a DFO rep, will invite a select subset of highly-qualified students to apply for institutional nomination. You must submit a pre-application (Step 2) to be considered by the committee.

Required Pre-application Deadline: Thursday, October 15th at noon.

You must complete Step 1 to receive an internal application. Students are encouraged to contact us in advance of the deadline to discuss the program and receive feedback.

Step 3. Apply for Nomination

Students selected by the Drexel Goldwater Nominating Committee will be notified in late October. Invited students must submit an application for Drexel nomination by Thursday, November 12 at noon. 

Internal Application Deadline: November 12 at 12 PM (noon).
Goldwater Nominees will be announced by November 20.

Step 4: Nominee Application Review

Campus review deadline (for nominees): December 17 at 12 PM (noon).

Nominated students will submit a full application, including letters of recommendation by this date. Sample application materials are available on the Fellowships Blackboard Site

Nominees will meet with the nominating committee in early January to discuss their applications and receive feedback.

Step 5. National Application Deadline

Goldwater's national deadline is January 29, 2016, 5PM CST.
