Critical Language Scholarship Update
February 7, 2014
Congratulations to Yasin Khan (Public Health, Master's, '14). She received a Critical Language Scholarship to study Urdu in Lucknow, India. Matt D'Arcy (Mechanical Engineering, BS '14, Honors) is a CLS alternate for Korean. Fingers crossed!
Yasin hopes to use her Urdu language skills when working on gender based violence and women’s health. Yasin served in AmeriCorps’ City Year Louisiana and has been working on violence prevention for several years. Most recently, she completed an internship at UCLA's Labor and Occupational Health Department and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) conducting research on workplace violence.
Matt's interest in Korea stems from his passion for aerospace research. In addition to learning Korean, he hopes to conduct research at Space Systems Research Laboratory of Korea Aerospace University (KAU) with support from the Fulbright US Student Program.
As a Drexel student, he completed three co-ops including at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. He also conducted research at Drexel's Space Systems Laboratory (advisor: with Dr. Jin Kang).
The Critical Language Scholarship Program, sponsored by the US Dept. of State, offers fully-funded summer institutes in 13 critical languages. For more information visit the CLS website or email Cindy Schaarschmidt, Asst. Director, Fellowships Office.
