Community Resilience Hubs : A Model for Advancing Climate Resilience in Baltimore
Initiated in 2015, Baltimore’s Community Resiliency Hub Program is an innovative and impactful community-centered initiative that increases community capacity to prepare for, withstand, and respond to natural hazard impacts and emergency situations. The goal of this program is to better connect frontline community organizations with focused support and resources so that, in the event of a natural disaster or emergency, there is improved provision of emergency response and recovery services to under-resourced neighborhoods and their most vulnerable residents. The 15 organizations in the Program are all trusted, service-based non-profits with strong leadership located in under-resourced and climate-vulnerable neighborhoods. Cities across the country are learning from Baltimore’s program and implementing Resiliency Hub models of their own. Aubrey Germ, the Climate and Resilience Planner for Baltimore’s Office of Sustainability, manages the Community Resilience Hub program and will present on the concept of a resilience hub, what the program and partnership entails, and the ins and outs of how Hubs operate. She will also share examples of how they’ve been effective resources for the communities they serve, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
