About Us

Welcome to the Center for Firefighter Injury Research and Safety Trends (FIRST). The FIRST Center is a research enterprise organized to support the United States fire and rescue service through objective data collection and analysis. For those of you familiar with our work at Drexel, you may know FIRST as an individual project. Indeed, that is how our research started.

Since 2007, our work with United States fire and rescue service has grown. Therefore, we re-branded FIRST to reflect this growth. From now on, the term FIRST unites all of our work in firefighter injury research and safety trends.

In November 2015, Dr. Jennifer Taylor of the Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University was invited by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to participate in planning the next research agenda for the United States Fire Service. She served on a panel of researchers discussing the application of the 16 initiatives to their work. What follows is a reflection on how the initiatives have guided her research and how a diversity of funding streams has developed a strong interconnectedness among her projects. Arrows connecting one project to another are explained by referring to the corresponding numbers below.
