New Director of English Language Center
October 27, 2015
After 14 years of leadership, Barbara Hoekje, PhD, has decided to step down as director of Drexel’s English Language Center (ELC). Tobie Hoffman, previously the ELC’s associate director for University and Intensive programs, has been appointed as the new director.
In her previous role, Hoffman was responsible for managing the development of the University transition programs, including University Preparation, International Gateway and the Graduate Bridge program. Her early interests in assessment practices led to the founding of the first IELTS testing center in Philadelphia with certifications in speaking and writing assessment. In May, she was part of the Drexel team that received the University Award for Pedagogy and Assessment.
As we welcome Hoffman to her new role, we extend our sincere gratitude and thanks to Barbara Hoekje, PhD, for her leadership and dedication to the English Language Center. As director, Hoekje oversaw accreditation of the Center through the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation, and a major expansion of center programs, including two undergraduate admissions programs, International Gateway and University Preparation, as well as numerous grant-funded programs through the U.S. Department of State (ECA), including the prestigious Fulbright pre-academic programs (2009–2015) and the European Student Leaders programs (2006–2011). As associate professor of communication in the Department of Communication, Hoekje’s scholarship focuses on the assessment and use of English for academic and professional purposes, which is the focus of her sabbatical in AY 15-16.
