The fine line of success: An assessment of the target ecological elevations of three thin layer sediment placement projects in NJ

As the relative sea levels of New Jersey continue to rise, the necessity for protecting our coastal marsh landscapes and the critical habitat they provide is becoming more apparent. Spurred on by the needs for enhancement of marsh habitat and for improved dredged material management, three thin layer sediment placement (TLP) projects in Fortescue, Middle Township, and Avalon, NJ were initiated in 2013 with the intention of increasing the resiliency of the NJ coastline against the effects of global climate change. Our work will evaluate the placement of target elevations, whether we met our target elevations, and provide recommendations for target elevation setting for future TLP projects.
