Walt Whitman and the Civil War

Walt Whitman served as a volunteer nurse caring for wounded soldiers in New York and Washington, D.C., hospitals during the Civil War. He writes about this experience and his love and mourning for President Lincoln in some of his most noted poems.

Miller will provide historical context for Whitman's Civil War poems, and Nielson will read and discuss some of Whitman's most important poems about the Civil War and President Lincoln.

A question and answer period will follow the presentation.
