Development of a Philosophy and Political Economy Course

Project: 11
Name: Peter Amato, PhD (; 215.895.1353)
Department: History

Working on developing a course that would be an introduction to Political Economy from the standpoint of Philosophy, surveying both major integrative theories from both a historical and critical perspectives.

Associated Independent Study

Such an independent study course would be a trial run of a course like the one I would like to develop, although the student would be facilitating that project by testing out materials, commenting on and criticizing the use to which they would be placed and making his or her own suggestions and recommendations about how to build on the experience and make the course more viable.

Gained Experience

The student who has an interest in either philosophy or politics or economics will see his or her appreciation of their mutuality enhanced. From the historical and a critical perspective the project will engage the student in dialogue with some of the most influential and important works in the modern era of sociology, economics, political science, and philosophy.

I hope to develop a course that would be viable and perhaps taught as an interdisciplinary course one day.

He or she will mostly be reading material I am considering for the class, critiquing it from the standpoint of its appropriateness and coherence with the syllabus plan. I anticipate also using some film and video materials which I'd like the student to view and critique. This work will often include helping me develop relevant, interesting, and answerable review questions that can be used for assignments and exams.

We'll meet at my office or outside to talk when that's necessary, perhaps every couple of weeks or every week if we have the independent study class for 3 credits.
