Born in the U.K, Dr. Sandapen sees a clear nexus between literature, popular culture and the way we live now. She studies contemporary cultural studies in the U.K. and is part of the Black British Women Writers Network, an organization that seeks “to stimulate the discussion of the literary art of women writers of African and African-Caribbean descent living in Britain.”
In her literature classes, she tries to help students see the connections between their world and the written world as she believes books do not exist in a vacuum. She takes the approach in her first-year writing courses in which she challenges students to self-reflect and write about the world they live in. Her favorite subject is always the class she is teaching at the moment.
In addition to teaching Dr. Sandapen serves as director for the English Programs.
