Wendi Muse on Academia Online: Democratizing Knowledge One Tweet at a Time

How has social media increasingly become the preferred outlet for public humanities work, despite the initial reluctance and fear of digital mediums by academia? Muse will comment on the ways such an approach to education increases accessibility, not just in terms of access to academic material traditionally confined behind paywalls, but with regard to the diverse communities with whom social media has allowed academics to more closely engage. She will also discuss her own research, which brings the histories of leftists of color to the greater public, and interrogates ongoing co-optation, corporatization, and depoliticization of new and radical approaches to academia in the digital space.

Wendi Muse is a PhD Candidate in History at New York University. Her dissertation, "Exiles & Allies: Race, Resistance, and Radical Thought in Cold War Brazil and Portuguese Africa" analyzes Portuguese Africa's impact on the Brazilian left through intellectual and political exchange. In addition to her doctoral work, Muse holds a Master's in Latin American Studies, has lived and worked in Brazil, and has also conducted research regarding Afro-Brazilian political organizing throughout the 20th century. Wendi is also the creator of the Left POCket Project, which makes the histories of leftist movements led by and comprised of people of color more easily accessible to the public. You can find her on twitter at @MuseWendi and follow the Left POCket Project by visiting @LeftPOC.
