Please join the Center for Science, Technology and Society and the Department of Communication for the first installment of the STS Colloquium Series of 2018-19:"Black Holes, Clones and Other Anti-Anxiety Parables From Science Fiction" with Jessa Lingel, PhD, from the Annenberg School of Communication. at the University of Pennsylvania.

Beyond entertainment or escapism, why read science fiction? What does the genre help us do and see? This talk analyzes themes in science fiction — black holes and clones — as a way of thinking through anxieties around technological change. More than a genre of fiction, science fiction gives us a vocabulary and a narrative roadmap for understanding some of the ethical and political dilemmas presented by AI, automation and the rapid integration of digital technologies into everyday life.

Lingel is an assistant professor of communication, and studies digital culture, looking for the ways that relationships to technology can show us gaps in power or possibilities for social change.

This event is free and open to the public, lunch will be included.
