CoAS Creates New Role: Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce that it will appoint an internal candidate to the new role of Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, with an expected start date of September 1, 2020. This new position will report directly to the Dean and become a member of the Dean’s Leadership Team, a group comprising Department Heads, Associate Deans and Directors.
The successful candidate will integrate diversity, equity and inclusion into the College’s manifold operations, including academic, personnel, budgeting, and strategic planning. The Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will also provide administrative and academic oversight of ethnic and gender studies programs (Africana Studies, Jewish Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies), working in close collaboration with the Department Heads and faculty experts who are located in several units of the College, to strategize on how to structure, expand and grow these programs.
Among the duties of the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be the following:
- Promote a diverse, equitable and respectful environment for faculty, staff and students.
- Provide leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating existing and emerging initiatives pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the College and at all levels of its operations (e.g., student success, faculty and staff hiring and retention, mentorship and professional development, and more).
- Address social climate issues and propose and implement policies that will help the College become a leader in diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Liaise and collaborate with relevant university-level DEI offices and university-wide initiatives.
- Increase internal and external visibility of existing partnerships between the College and the community, highlighting current synergies and locating opportunities for new ones.
- Inform College and community stakeholders of activities that advance the College’s strategic priorities in these areas.
- Provide thought-leadership and academic and administrative oversight of Africana Studies, Jewish Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies, including a likely restructuring of these programs.
- Work with Department Heads to provide guidance on course and curricular revisions focused on intercultural understanding, anti-racist, decolonial and inclusive pedagogies
The length of the appointment is expected to be three years, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance.
