New Faculty in the Department of History & Politics

The Department of History and Politics welcomes its new faculty members! Please join us in giving a warm greeting to:
Phillip Ayoub, PhD, assistant professor of political science. Professor Ayoub joins us from Cornell University where he completed his work on gay rights and the politics of visibility. Ayoub is working on his book manuscript “When States ‘Come Out’: The Politics of Visiblity and the Diffusion of Sexual Minority Rights in Europe” and will teach classes in social movements, LGBTQ rights, international relations, and comparative politics.
Debjani Bhattacharyya, PhD, assistant professor of history. Professor Bhattacharyya joins us from Emory University where she completed work on the intersection of urban, environmental and economic history, more commonly known as spatial history. Her dissertation specifically explored colonial urbanism in modern South Asia. Professor Bhatacharyya will be teaching courses on Indian and Indian Ocean history, South Asian history, colonial and post-colonial urban studies, and global environmental history.
Audrey Comstock, PhD, international law and policy fellow. Professor Comstock is a PhD candidate at Cornell University and conducts research on international law, legal commitments and compliance, and human rights.
Elva Orozco-Mendoza, PhD, teaching fellow. Professor Orozco-Mendoza joins us from the University of Massachusetts where she is a PhD candidate completing her work in political theory.
Gwen Ottinger, PhD, assistant professor of science, technology and society. Professor Ottinger joins us from University of California, Berkeley, where she completed work on energy and resources. Professor Ottinger conducts research on technologies used to measure air toxicity, and the ethical claims associated with this new technology, working at the crossroads of science technology and environmental justice.
