CBL Info Session: Disaster & Resilience in Puerto Rico

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

5:30 PM-6:30 PM

Steve Dolph, PhD, Assistant Teaching Professor-Spanish, will lead an info session about his community-based learning opportunity in Puerto Rico!

Additional information:

Spend December 14-21, 2019 in Puerto Rico. This unique opportunity allows students to engage in experiential learning, sustainability and design. This information session (July 23) will answer student questions about this community-based learning (CBL) opportunity, as well as the winter course that accompanies this CBL course. Scholarships are available.

About the CBL course:

This course examines critical resource infrastructure on the island of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Centered on a week-long workshop at Plenitud — a permaculture demonstration farm in Las Marias — this intensive CBL course is designed to support an ongoing rainwater harvesting outreach project in the municipality of Añasco.

From December 14–21, 2019, students work side-by-side with local facilitators and community leaders to develop, implement, and document the installation and maintenance of rainwater collection systems. This hands-on community-based workshop is supplemented by a pre-departure training, local site visits, and daily lectures on permaculture design, island ecology, and environmental resilience.

Co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Global Studies and Modern Languages, and the Lindy Center.
