Panorama 2011

September 30, 2011

College of Arts and Sciences freshmen kicked off the school year with PANORAMA 2011, a Drexel tradition now in its second year.

On the morning of September 16, roughly 400 CoAS students, faculty and staff gathered in Behrakis Hall to discuss the 2011 shared freshmen reading: Hoops by Philadelphia-native Major Jackson. In an exciting twist this year, Jackson joined the event—via Skype.

Following the discussion, the group headed to the steps of the Main Building to recreate a 1920’s-era photo from the University Archives. The photo will be available to participants in their University 101 courses.

Hoops was a finalist for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Literature – Poetry and is the first collection of poems to be used in the Freshman Reading Program.

On October 16th, Jackson will be on campus for a university-wide lecture and book signing at 5pm in Main Auditorium. He will also host an intimate master class earlier in the day. The winners and runners-up of the Freshman Reading Program writing contest will be invited to attend.

This year’s prompt for the contest, written by Jackson himself, asks students to write about their favorite place in Philadelphia in a poem or short prose piece. Attendees of the master class will have the opportunity to get valuable feedback on their own work.
