Käthe Kollwitz: German Artist, Rebel, and Spirit

Tuesday, October 23, 2018

6:00 PM-8:00 PM

Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was a painter, printmaker and sculptor, and is one of Germany’s most revered artists. Kollwitz’s work illustrates the poverty, war and social injustices of the time. Regarded as a “rebel” because of her work and political beliefs, she was threatened by the Gestapo in 1936. Kollwitz was a passionate artist and remains a controversial political figure. Her work is an enduring testament to her sense of duty as an artist.

In this lecture, author Julie Maloney will explore Käthe Kollwitz’s work, which inspired her 2018 novel "A Matter of Chance." As a writer, Maloney states that her responsibility lies similarly with Kollwitz’s philosophy: “Be what you have chosen to be with all your heart.” Maloney will also discuss her journey to Germany, and her conversations with the curator of the Heidelberg University Museum.
