Abstract: Contemporary financialized subjects’ relationship to debt supplants and distracts from "freedom dreams," which have become a luxury, or rather, the elusive necessity that is freedom has been dubbed over by luxury. Azealia Banks’ “Broke With Expensive Taste,” Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money,” and black poetics can help us think through some of this. This talk concerns issues of blackness, inclusionist desire, affect, the financialization of everyday life as an outgrowth of the plantation, and poetics. It will focus on the sounds of monstrosity, rage and repair in Rihanna’s and Azealia Banks’ recent music and lyrics.
