Volpe Gives Men’s Fitness Readers Nutrition Tips

December 1, 2012

Stella Volpe, PhD, Chair of the Nutrition Sciences Department, was interviewed by Men’s Fitness Magazine for a Q&A article about stomach bloating that men may experience during and after a workout. After another professional who was interviewed for the article explained how the bloating physically occurs, Volpe provided tips and information for readers about how to prevent it from occurring in the first place. She suggested that readers monitor their fiber intake and hydration, as well as aim to include lean protein, Vitamin C, and potassium in each meal of the day. Volpe’s example of what she calls a healthy “go-to” meal includes grilled salmon, steamed broccoli, and half a cup of brown rice drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with dried cranberries. However, if these efforts don't ease the issue and bloating persists for more than three weeks, Volpe says, “See your doctor. It's probably nothing to worry about, but it could signal a food allergy or intolerance that's worth addressing.”
