Jessica Chou, PhD focuses on community-based research within marginalized populations. Her focus on family-centered substance abuse treatment stems from her time spent working in a gender-specific community organization conducting research and program development. Specifically, she is interested in understanding how to best meet the needs of women, children and families impacted by substance use disorders. Her research efforts explore community-based programming for women and mothers in recovery and their families, prevention mechanisms for the transmission of intergenerational substance use and specialized programming for women and mothers with substance use disorders who have been incarcerated.

Additionally, Chou is interested in clinical and research work with refugee families. Her research questions include: How does the migration trajectory from pre- through post-migration impact resettlement for families? How does transnational living impact families? How are parent-child relationships impacted by migration, trauma and resettlement?

Research Interests:

  • Women and maternal substance use
  • Intergenerational transmission of substance use
  • Motherhood and parenting among women with substance use disorders
  • Gender-specific community-based treatment and programming
