Course Description
This workshop presents practical content for creative arts therapists to consider for creating and maintaining a strong digital presence through the use of social media professionally, ethically, and creatively. Topics about digital boundaries, e-professionalism, the impact of ones digital footprint will be explored, as well as the introduction of ethical frameworks to help inform the art therapist’s social media activity. Participants will also be introduced to important strategies for promoting a presence online that aligns with their work, passions, values, and career interests.  Workshop content will include lecture, discussion, and creative experientials.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Recognize 3 competences for developing an ethical and professional digital presence
  • Learn 3 strategies for professionally sharing content on social media
  • Identify 3 ethical frameworks and strategies to consider for professional social media use as a mental health professional

Gretchen Miller, MA, ATR-BC, ACTP is a Registered Board Certified Art Therapist and a National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC) Advanced Certified Trauma Practitioner, practicing in Greater Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. For almost two decades, her clinical work as an Art Therapist has focused on providing services to children, adolescents, women, and families impacted by trauma, domestic violence, homelessness, grief & loss, and mental health challenges. Gretchen presents regionally and nationally on the application of art therapy, is a guest lecturer, invited speaker, and adjunct professor for Ursuline College's Master of Arts in Counseling and Art Therapy Program. In 2017, Gretchen is the author of The Art Therapist’s Guide to Social Media, inspired by her love of connecting the art therapy community through technology and online experiences over the last 20 years. Gretchen has created and managed various websites, forums, and blogging related to art therapy, creativity, and community organizing for art therapists; including serving as past Web Editor of the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), the AATA’s Social Media Committee, and Founder of the online communities Art Therapy Alliance and 6 Degrees of Creativity. She also currently serves on the AATA Board of Directors.


National Board of Certified Counselors:


Drexel University’s Department of Creative Arts Therapies is an Approved Continuing Education Provider by the National Board of Certified Counselors.

For LPCs, NCCs, and Art Therapists, Dance/Movement Therapists & Music Therapists: The workshop qualifies for the following continuing education credits: 5 CE Hours (includes 3 CE Hours of ethics). A Certificate of Completion will be awarded following the presentation to all who attend and follow protocol for registration and evaluation forms.
