Drexel University’s Board of Trustees confirmed by a unanimous vote Antonio Merlo, PhD, as Drexel’s 16th president, the University announced on January 31.
Dr. Merlo is a scholar of political economy, policy analysis, public economics, bargaining theory and applications, and empirical microeconomics. He has published widely in leading economics journals, and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his academic work.
Since 2019, Dr. Merlo has led New York University’s largest academic unit, comprising three schools (the College of Arts & Science, the Graduate School of Arts & Science, and Liberal Studies), and dozens of departments, research centers, institutes, and language and cultural houses.
Dr. Merlo will begin his tenure at Drexel on July 1, 2025. The president-elect said in a statement he would visit campus often to meet with students, faculty, staff, and alumni in the coming months.
