Commercial real estate firm JLL has ranked Philadelphia – the home of Drexel University and the College of Computing & Informatics – as one of the top ten cities in the U.S. for computer programming talent.
Philadelphia ranked 10th in the nation for computer programming talent and 11th in the available companies for software developers, according to a
June 20 Philadelphia Business Journal article, which also listed the average computer programming salary at $86,300 in the Greater Philadelphia area.
Experts say that while the city has a growing population of computer programmers, many companies are still struggling to fill open tech jobs as technology permeates every industry.
CCI Dean and Isaac L. Auerbach Professor Yi Deng, PhD told the Philadelphia Business Journal that CCI’s computer science program is growing each year, with 100 more students being matriculated in fall 2017. The College also plans to launch initiatives to increase the number of women in the IT field.
“Drexel has been an engine in terms of IT talent supply,” Deng said. “Our College of Computing &
Informatics here is one of the most comprehensive IT programs in the nation.”
The city’s ranking comes on the heels of survey results announced by global staffing firm Robert Half, which shows that hiring for technology jobs in Greater Philadelphia is expected to jump seven percent in the second half of 2017, according to a
June 26 Philadelphia Business Journal article.
