Major: BS Computer Science (Minors: Biology and Data Science)

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Cairo, Egypt

I chose this major because...  I’ve always been a STEM person, but I value ingenuity and innovation and aesthetic, and I think programming allows me to exercise that creative energy in a way that is still very methodical.

Favorite Course(s): Despite being completely lost for the majority of this course, CS 164 with Brian Stuart will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Clubs/Extracurricular Activities: Women in Computing Society (WiCS), Society of Women in Engineering (SWE)

Co-ops I've done: None yet, but I’m excited to see what my first one has in store for me this coming spring.

Favorite thing/place at Drexel: The observatory up on the roof of the main building.

When I'm not at Drexel, I'm... discovering new study spots, cafes and other hidden gems in Philly.

When you are in Philadelphia, I think you should... explore Fishtown! I’ve stumbled upon some of my favorite murals and restaurants up there.

Advice to new/incoming CCI students: Keep an open mind. You will learn so much about yourself and your surroundings throughout your time here, so you really have to allow yourself to be responsive to change, even if it may scare you.

What is your dream job? Right now, it’s bioinformatician. Knowing me, however, I will want to dip into multiple industries and have numerous talents throughout my career, especially since tech is such a diverse field.

Favorite Animated Character: Stitch!

Bio

Hello! My name is Manal and, in my first quarter here alone, I was a biomedical engineering major, a custom-design major, a first-year exploratory studies student and, finally, a CS major. Before coming to Drexel, I was born and raised in Egypt, and relocated to Lititz, PA, during my junior year of high school. I have minors in biology and data science, and I am a research assistant at the EESI Lab, as well as part of the Honors college. Apart from coding, I also love running, the beach, sushi, drawing and horseback riding. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or simply feel like chatting!
