Major: BS Information Systems, Minor in Security Technology

Year: Junior

Hometown: Born in Canada, primarily residing in Cherry Hill, NJ

I chose this major because…: Coming into Drexel, I actually wasn’t in CCI. I was a Biology major with no idea what I wanted to do with that degree and that’s okay. Through some unfortunate mishaps and failures by me, I switched into CCI and I decided to go into Info Systems because I actually didn’t know about the CST program, but also back then, I didn’t know that I’d eventually want to end up in security. Info Systems appealed to me because it ties in both business and tech, which is what I previously wanted to get into.

Favorite course(s): My favorite courses to date have to be CT388 (Hacking & Pen Testing) and CT212- Computer Forensics. Mainly because both of those classes were very hands on and I was learning a lot! Plus, the professors really helped us, the students, to be involved and engaged in the class!

Clubs/Extracurricular Activities: Drexel CyberDragons, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), LeBow Business Society, Drexel IEEE

Co-ops I’ve done: 1st Co-Op: PJM Interconnection, Facilities Services
2nd Co-Op: PJM Interconnection, Physical Security Analyst
Incoming 3rd co-op: Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, Information Security Analyst

Favorite thing/place at Drexel: Cira Green, great overview of the city. My favorite place used to be PISB but now CCI is probably my favorite, I’m there all the time when I’m in classes (if you see me don’t be scared to reach out). Also, the DAC is up there on my list.

When I’m not at Drexel, I’m…: Probably doing something related to fitness to be honest, continuously learning about new training methodologies. Watching TV shows or movies, or gaming! Also, I love watching and talking about sports (football, basketball).

When you are in Philadelphia, I think you should…: I’d recommend going out and do new things. There’s a website solely for giving people ideas and giving information about events (! Get a group of friends and explore the city (use your best judgement). There’s a lot to do in the city and there is always something to do!

Advice to new/incoming CCI students: Like my above answer, don’t be scared to do new things. Coming into Drexel as a freshman, I only went to classes, came back from class, and did homework. Involve yourself, do something outside the classroom such as join clubs, go to events, games, etc! Getting out of your comfort zone is a great way to find new interests, an easy way to meet new people as well! But at the same time, time management is key to making this all work as well. Drexel is fast paced, I learned that the hard way freshman year. Find what works best for you and get in a routine early on!

Also, don’t be scared to reach out to anyone at CCI. We’re all here to help each other out! Whether it be advisors, faculty, peer mentors, dean’s ambassadors, we’re all here.

What is your dream job?I’d love to be a personal trainer, maybe as a side thing in the near future, but ideally, I’d love to be a penetration tester/ethical hacker!

Favorite animated character: Bugs Bunny or Mowgli.

Hi everyone, I’m Joshua Koku and I’m a 4th year Information Systems student with a minor in Security Technology. I love tech and security! Something that attracted me to STEM when I was younger is that there’s always something new to learn and so many technical advances happen and I knew from a very early age, that tech is a field that I’d love to be involved in. Always open to meeting new people and talking!
