Major: BS Computer Science
Hometown: Norristown, PA
I chose this major because…: I’m still not sure where to focus my efforts, but I hope to bridge the communication gap between engineers and non-tech people, whether in healthcare, politics, aviation, or finance setting. By choosing to study Computer Science, I will gain the necessary skills that will enable me to be versatile and marketable in whatever field I choose to go into.
Favorite course(s): DragonsTeach - I co-taught elementary students basic chemistry and psychology principles as part of the “field work” for this class - I loved how enthusiastic and receptive the kids were to my lessons! I felt like I was actually teaching them something, and not them just regurgitating information back to me. The discussions we had in-class with the other DragonsTeach students and professor opened my eyes to the problems in the education system and provided a unique outlet to develop and share interesting insights into the future of academia and America’s youth.
Clubs/Extracurricular Activities: Drexel Blockchain, Women in Computing, Society of Women Engineers
Co-ops I’ve done: Data Analyst at Comcast (current co-op, first out of three)
Favorite thing/place at Drexel: Rush Garden in the spring and summertime! I enjoy getting lunch from a food truck (Filipino BBQ with some bubble tea from KFT or Tran’s food truck) and eating there on nice days. However, beware of the feisty squirrels that envy your meal!
When I’m not at Drexel, I’m…: traveling to visit friends or family, at home spending time with my dog, playing the piano, swimming, or exploring new places to eat!
When you are in Philadelphia, I think you should…: go to Cira Green to enjoy the view of the city from above! During the summer, they play free movies - bring some snacks, a blanket, and some friends for a relaxing time! If you’re in center city, check out Reading Terminal Market for a wide variety of food, Classic Cake for a cute cafe near Suburban Train station, or Chinatown for cheap hot pot and quality bubble tea.
Advice to new/incoming CCI students: It’s okay to not have your life figured out! Don’t compare yourselves to others who are doing their best to live their lives, everyone has unique journeys. Be open to new opportunities, talk to everyone and anyone, work hard in whatever you do - college is for trying things out, don’t let fear and uncertainty keep you from finding what you truly care about!
What is your dream job? I look forward to channeling my wide array of interests with my technical and soft skill set that is applicable to many fields and allows flexibility and diversity in my future career. One possible route I would like to go into is developing software for safer drone automation and dealing with the machine learning and security risks aspects. I would also love to be an advocate for Mental Health awareness and be a leader for diversity in the tech world.
Favorite animated character: Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb
Hey, my name is Jess and I’m a sophomore studying CS! My mother is from Ecuador and my father is from India, so I was brought up around different cultures while living in the U.S. and have been able to travel quite a bit. During the summer after my freshman year, I participated in STAR and was able to work on research concerning safety regulations for drone automation. Besides eating a lot of food (as you can tell from my answers to the questions above lol), I really like going to concerts and other events around the city. Please feel free to reach out to me with any CCI or Drexel questions - or anything really!
