Academic Philosophy

Professor Andrea Forte instructing at 3675 Market

Drexel University College of Computing & Informatics’ (CCI) academic philosophy is built upon a strong foundation of interdisciplinarity, creativity, applied knowledge, collaboration, and market-responsiveness. We are proud to be the launching point to the careers of thousands of accomplished alumni, who are leading the information and technology economy across the world as experts, entrepreneurs, executives and innovators.

There is a place for everyone at Drexel CCI. With an academic portfolio that spans the full spectrum of information science and computing disciplines, our degree programs appeal to a variety of students, both with or without a math or technical background.

CCI is dedicated to fostering and celebrating inclusivity and diversity through programming hosted by the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Council, Diversity in Tech Initiative and CCI Corporate Partners Program.

Through our online programs, we are committed to a seamless, continuous and high-quality academic experience. Due to the strong technological structure and foundation of our College, Drexel CCI provides robust, engaging, valuable online learning experiences while maintaining our small-community spirit.

Academic Foundations for Professional Success

CCI’s interdisciplinary academic programs prepare our students to excel and lead in the digital economy. CCI courses are instructed by world-class faculty members who are experts in the information science and technology fields, and are actively engaged in research projects with industry. Our faculty and professional staff are deeply committed to student success; we meet our students where they are in providing support through every step of a student’s Drexel journey, such as our award-winning academic advising team, CCI Learning Center (CCILC), Dean's Ambassadors, peer mentors, teaching and lab assistants, and/or faculty mentors.

Our undergraduate programs encourage students to explore a wide range of computing and information science disciplines to cultivate their passion and desired career path. Through interactive coursework and collaborative team projects, CCI undergraduate students are encouraged to hone their creativity and initiative to push the boundaries of what technology can achieve. As a culmination of their studies at Drexel, all seniors participate in the Senior Project, a multi-term, team-based, industry-guided capstone experience involving in-depth study and application of computing and informatics.

Our master's and certificate programs are designed around today’s industry needs and offered in stackable, flexible formats to allow working professionals to customize their academic experience to meet their career goals and fit their busy schedules. With both online or on-campus programs and courses, CCI students are offered the same rigorous, hands-on educational experience to meet the demands of today's tech-driven economy.

Experiential Learning

CCI students are encouraged to learn by doing. From computer science to human-computer interaction to health informatics, our students hone their problem-solving skills and creativity from day one to help solve today’s most pressing tech and information challenges. Using real-world datasets and problems, coursework frequently includes designing products or proposals to help solve pain points affecting a variety of industries. CCI students are encouraged to apply their skills outside of the classroom through study abroad, student organizations, undergraduate and graduate research opportunities, and College-wide events such as Philly Codefest, where attendees develop novel technical applications and solutions to benefit society.

Collaborative Learning Spaces

Our home at 3675 Market was designed with two principles in mind: to be student-centric and to stimulate collaboration and engagement. Occupying two-and-a-half floors in the new uCity Square building, allows our faculty, students and professional staff to collaborate and innovate. The 9th floor features a newly-opened maker space with modular workspaces and a 3D printer, as well as lab space to support testing and simulations as part of ongoing applied research projects and coursework.
