Biography

Michael S. Cordano is an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Information Science within the College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) at Drexel University. After studying mechanical engineering at Rowan University, Michael worked for various defense contractors, providing engineering and cybersecurity support for industrial control systems onboard U.S. Navy vessels. This work evolved into the development of digital models of naval control system networks, designed for ingestion by an advanced cyber vulnerability analysis tool. After receiving a Master’s in Cybersecurity with a concentration in Cyberterrorism, Michael leveraged an in-depth understanding of control systems to develop and teach a six-module navy control system cybersecurity workforce training program at Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA). Most recently, Michael has worked in the research, development, testing, and evaluation of control system cybersecurity tools, providing product management support for the software development team in the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University.

Michael has directed penetration testing teams, managed network enumeration tool development, and has built insight-generating, data-linked ontologies both for NAVSEA/U.S. Navy applications and for academic research. In March 2022, Michael helped develop an ontology to map and mitigate control system vulnerabilities, presenting the findings at the International Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security. Outside the defense and academia world, Michael is passionate about cyber philosophy, studying the psychological and societal implications of an increasingly digital environment, and has written on the lack of legal infrastructure in place to protect humans from the dangers of algorithmic behavior.
