Luncheon Panel: What Accreditors Don't Tell You but Probably Should

This panel is dedicated to all of the things that the panelists wish that they would have known while they were leading their own accreditation review. Many times individuals will agonize over small decisions, spend time on things that they shouldn't or do things that should have been delegated. Some of this could have been avoided with some well-timed guidance. Come out and listen to some stories and tips at this accreditation therapy session .

Karol Batey, Assistant Director of Institutional Assessment, Research, and Planning - Texas A&M International University

Karol Batey is the Assistant Director of Institutional Assessment, Research, and Planning at Texas A&M International University. Karol has 14 years of experience in education and state government. Additionally, she has five years of experience working with SACSCOC Accreditation and University Assessment at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas. Karol is a member of the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education, serving as Vice-Chair of the Communications Committee and the Texas Association for Higher Education Assessment. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts (BA) from Texas Tech University, a Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAcc) from Texas A&M International University, and is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Education in Learning and Organizational Change (Ed.D.) at Baylor University. She also serves her community as a board member for the Laredo Theater Guild International, where she volunteers as a director and actress.

Dr. Colin Suchland, Professor of Sociology/ Learning Outcomes Assessment Team - Lincoln Land Community College

Dr. Colin E. Suchland holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. As a tenured professor at Lincoln Land Community College, he has served as President of the Faculty Senate and Chair of the Learning Outcomes Assessment Team. Suchland’s academic interests include critical pedagogy, digital media studies, generational studies, social inequalities, and urban communities. He is a proud member of the American Sociological Association, the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology, the Midwest Sociological Society, and the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education. He also is the recipient of an AEFIS Partner Award for his role in piloting new assessment processes at LLCC.

Terri Shaprio, PH.D. Associate Professor of Psychology – Hofstra University

Terri Shapiro earned her Ph.D. in Applied Research and Evaluation in Psychology from Hofstra University where she is currently an Associate Professor of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. From 2013-2015 she served as Associate Provost for Accreditation and Outcomes Assessment and from 2015 to 2020 she served as Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Hofstra. As the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs she worked closely with the Provost to plan and develop academic programs, initiatives, and budgets, to support the University’s short and long-term strategic goals, and institutional mission. She provided leadership, and leadership development, across the university including shared governance, relations with the AAUP, participated in administrative decision making, and built relationships with faculty, chairs, deans, vice provosts, and other Academic and Administrative units across the University. Dr. Shapiro oversaw Faculty Affairs, including Faculty Development, a Leadership Development program, technology and online learning initiatives, and Faculty Research, Education and Development (FRED) seminars and workshops, application of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Faculty Policy Series, Faculty Statutes and all other processes that involve faculty. She also was responsible for leading the University’s institution-wide Assessment and Accreditation, managing, reviewing and supporting the accrediting process for institutional and program-level accreditations, including 32 specialized accreditations. She coordinated and supported the University’s academic outcomes assessment program, which included the assessment of student outcomes in both general education and the program or major. She also played a key role in the University’s recent, and very successful, Middle States institutional accreditation process. Dr. Shapiro has also been a consultant to organizations on Leadership Development, the customer experience, service quality and survey and sampling. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in leadership, research methods, industrial and organizational psychology, consumer psychology at Hofstra and has also taught courses in Leadership, Organizational Development, and Research Methods for the Baruch College Executive MBA Program in Singapore and Taiwan.

Joseph Hawk, Executive Director of Assessment and Accreditation & Drexel Conference Co-Chair – Drexel University

Joseph Hawk is the Executive Director of Assessment and Accreditation at Drexel University where he oversees Institutional Accreditation and supports programmatic accreditation as well as the administration of learning assessment throughout campus. He serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and was a co-chair for the recent accreditation review and re-affirmed accreditation for the University. He has been a co-chair for the Drexel Assessment Conference for 8 years.
