Lindy Center for Civic Engagement
Drexel’s vision of a comprehensive urban university striving to be the most civically engaged in the nation comes to life for students through the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement.
The Lindy Center for Civic Engagement believes that, in order for actions to be most effective, students must understand the context of social issues, develop relationships with people experiencing and actively working on them, and reflect on their own relationships to these important topics.
In collaboration with the community and in support of Drexel’s Strategic Plan, the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement fosters a culture of civic responsibility by providing programs and resources that empower Drexel students and the broader University community to expand their civic identities through engagement in mutually beneficial partnerships that lead to a more just society.

CIVIC 101
CIVC 101, "Introduction to Civic Engagement," is a required first-year course for Drexel undergraduate students. The course is designed to be an introduction to civic engagement and what it means to be responsible, socially-conscious citizens of Philadelphia and the world. Students learn the broad definition of civic engagement and critically examine key concepts related to civic and community engagement, including identity and social location, community, and systems of power.
Volunteer and Student Leadership Opportunities
The Lindy Center provides a variety of ways for Drexel Dragons to make an impact within our communities by partnering with local and national organizations, connecting students to both one-time volunteer activities and to longer-term service positions. These opportunities allow Dragons to develop their leadership skills while seeing firsthand the intrinsic value of helping those around them.
Community-based Learning
Community-based learning creates opportunities to cultivate relationships among students, faculty, and local/global community partners to pursue a public good and — whether on campus or online — to strengthen their collective capacity to address real problems that will support a more just world.
The Drexel Community Scholars program, which is dedicated to optimizing health and wellness education in the West Philadelphia community and matching Drexel students with non-profits and businesses to help build capacity and provide ongoing support.

The Certificate in Civic Engagement, which provides Drexel students with the intellectual grounding to be active participants in their communities on issues of public concern. The Certificate puts Drexel in the small but growing number of colleges and universities across the nation with an academic civic engagement program, offering courses on active citizenship, University-community partnerships and civic engagement leadership.
