    Over the holidays, Music Industry Professor Darren Walters led Drexel’s first study abroad program in Sao Paulo, Brazil, taking 11 students from various majors on a 10-day tour of the city’s music studios, record labels and cultural centers, including the Museum of Image & Sound and the University of Sao Paulo.

    Music Industry students Alexandra Berenson and Maura Mullen met four years ago when they lived in the same dorm. After realizing that they shared many of the same musical influences – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Supremes, Beck, and Jefferson Airplane – they formed their singer-songwriter duo, Moonshine Heather, using pristine harmonies set to the sounds of folk, R&B, rock and roll, and indie pop music.

    The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and our Music Industry program are co-hosting an audio/visual presentation by noted studio architect and acoustician John Storyk, who helped build Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland Studios in 1969 and has since provided design and construction supervision services for more than 3000 professional audio and video recording facilities.

    Schwabe started RareMP3s with music producer Noah Beresin (a.k.a. Xaphoon Jones, previously of the group Chiddy Bang), when they were asked to mix musician Baauer’s remix of Disclosure’s garage anthem, “You & Me.” Baauer is best known for his hit song “Harlem Shake,” which went viral on social media this past year.

The IMAs are the top national awards for college music recording programs and independently produced music and while the judges have made their decisions, voting is still open for fans to decide who they think deserve this year’s IMAs.     MAD Dragon records received seven nominations for Independent Music Awards. This Thursday, March 3rd is the annual MAD Dragon concert at the Mandell Theater (33rd & Chestnut St) featuring headliners Free Energy (Astralwerks). Free Energy, named by Rolling Stone as a 2010 artist to watch, will be joined on the bill by MAD Dragon recording artists The Spinning Leaves, Hezekiah Jones, Toy Soldiers and hip-hop MC Kuf Knotz.

    Pretend to Be Nice is available both digitally and on vinyl now, with a limited edition of 100 copies of the 7-inch available as red colored vinyl with a screen printed cover and bonus screen printed poster at Bantic Media is a music marketing company run by the students within Drexel University’s Music Industry Program, part of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.
    Bantic Media will release 300 limited edition pieces of random colored 7-inch vinyl with full color custom sleeves designed by the band and friends.

    Mad Dragon recording artist Kuf Knotz will perform a free show organized by the Latenight Series and the Homecoming Tradition’s Committee on Saturday, January 22nd.
    Kuf’s first solo album, Boombox Logic, released in the fall of 2010 on MAD Dragon Records, features tracks such as “Sunny Philadelphia,” likely to become another Philadelphia anthem just like Kuf’s song “Unstoppable,” which was played at the World Series and was proclaimed “The Phillies Official Song. ” A native Philadelphian, Kuf was discovered by legendary “Sound of Philadelphia” producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, who signed him to Philadelphia International Records.

Electro-pop band The Swimmers is MAD Dragon Records’ most recent release and their album, People Are Soft, received terrific critical acclaim.

    The Music Industry program has created two new albums of emerging artists. The bands were identified by our students who then recorded, mixed and mastered the songs. The records released are Chronicle of Sound and Unleashed 8
