WINTER GOSPEL

February 4, 2015

Come in and warm up from the bleak winter weather at the upcoming Gospel Choir concerts, beginning on February 7 with an Evening of African American Music. Traditional hymns have served as a staple in the African American Church since the 1800s; reflecting how the presentation of traditional songs has changed with the times, the choir will render “gospelized” versions of beloved hymns. The evening will open with a performance by the Drexel Jazztet featuring selections by African American Jazz legends, starting at 5:00pm in the Mandell Theater (33rd & Chestnut Streets).

Reverend Gregory Ross is celebrating his 30th anniversary as director of the Gospel Choir, which is in its 37th year, with a two-day concert on March 6 and 7 at 7:30pm. Transforming the Mandell Theater into a House of Worship, the choir will be joined by its alumni to record a live CD and DVD of contemporary and traditional selections written by Reverend Ross, alumni, and local artists. The title selection is "Lord Make Me a Vessel" penned by Reverend Ross. Additional selections will include "Lord I'm Sorry," "Psalm 91," "Psalm 95," "Rest Your Eyes on Him" and a rendition of the spiritual "Steal Away." Also performing that evening will be the Gospel Choir Praise Dancers and Mimes. The CD/DVD will be released this summer and will be available through choir membership, at local music stores and online.

Both concerts are free to the public.

The Gospel Choir is an open group comprised of 60-70 singers and includes both Drexel students and staff. The Choir is well known in both the University’s neighboring Mantua community and throughout the tri-state area. This past December they were joined by six local congregations for a concert that included poetry, dance and mime.  For more information please contact Reverend Ross at rossg@drexel.edu.
