Led by Jane Golden, the Mural Arts Program has turned Philadelphia into the home of the most important public art project in the United States. The program started in 1984 as a six-week anti-graffiti project for youth. Twenty-three years later, Ms. Golden, dozens of artists, neighborhood residents and volunteers have created over two thousand murals in the city of Philadelphia - more murals than any other city in the world. The Mural Arts Program has not only transformed the walls of the city and provided a source of pride for neighborhoods, but it also offers free mural-making and art education classes to under-served youth and employs over 300 artists per year.
