Joseph Hancock, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Design and Merchandising, was interviewed for an article entitled "Sticking to the Issues" which ran in Michigan State University's student newspaper The State News on October 20th. The article is focused on MSU's stage production of Hairspray, originally a movie by John Waters, in which an unlikely star is born in the form of the character, Tracy Turnblad - an overweight 'hair-hopper' from Baltimore who becomes the starlet of a local dance show (think American Bandstand). Although the overt tone of Hairspray is comedic, the characters all struggle with racism, weight and social class.
