Derek Gillman joined the Drexel faculty in 2014. From 2006-2013 he was Executive Director and President of the Barnes Foundation, where he stewarded the collection from Merion to a new campus in central Philadelphia designed by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. From 2001-06 he was President and Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He has worked on four significant building projects in addition to the Barnes: the conversion of an early 20th century former car factory for PAFA, designed by Dagit Saylor; a renovation of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, by Mario Bellini; a new building by Lab Architecture for the NGV's Australian collections; and the construction by Foster Associates of the Crescent Wing extension at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
Mr. Gillman was an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford University, where he first read Philosophy and Psychology, and then Chinese Studies, and holds a Master of Laws degree by research from UEA. A revised edition of his book The Idea of Cultural Heritage was published by Cambridge University Press in 2010. He is currently president of the International Cultural Property Society, and he sits on the Advisory Board of the Penn Museum where he is consulting scholar in the Asian section. In 2013 he was the Marina Kellen French Distinguished Visitor at the American Academy in Berlin.
