Design Charrette
charrette: an intensive and often collaborative period of design
The Department of Architecture + Interiors' Annual Interdisciplinary Design Charrette is an opportunity for students from all majors throughout Drexel University to collaborate on projects of relevance for local and global communities. The 2008 Design Charrette featured Rankin Scholar-in-Residence Cameron Sinclair, co-founder of Architecture for Humanity and co-author of Design Like You Give a Damn. Designs developed by the student teams were presented to a panel of critics including practicing professionals, community members and other guests. The projects were also exhibited at the AIA Center for Architecture in Philadelphia.
Sponsored by the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, the 2009 Design Charrette will focus on the design of public spaces throughout the city of Philadelphia. The projects will respond to the current economic crisis and consider issues of community involvement, access, outreach, environmental sustainability and urban renewal. Participating students will join interdisciplinary teams and develop design solutions for real-world problems through collaboration and team work. The charrette will be held the first weekend of April with student registration beginning in early March. In addition to inviting students from all majors to apply, the organizing committee for the charrette welcomes faculty participation from all disciplines as well. Please contact the Charrette Committee Co-chairs Lauren Karwoski-Magee or Debra Ruben.
