Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design

Art & Art History Program

Overview

The Department of Art & Art History houses the artists and art historians who teach the Design, Fine Arts, and Art History courses that provide the visual foundation for students in the applied arts majors of the college. The department offers an array of courses in basic 2-D and 3-D design, drawing, painting, sculpture, multi-media, printmaking, and art history. Many of these courses are available as electives to students in majors from outside of the college. Students in the studio courses learn to combine skills in using tools and materials, visual theoretical concepts, and new electronic technologies, all of which are necessary for design professionals. In the Art History courses they develop an eye for style, a visual vocabulary, a knowledge of examples of artistic excellence, and a historical context for contemporary art and design.

Minors

The department does not offer majors, but it does offer a minor in Art History and a minor in Fine Art. Both of these minors are flexible enough to be accessible to students in all majors. The Art History minor enables students to broaden and focus their understanding of the Humanities. The Fine Arts minor enables students to develop skills and concepts in the studio arts.
