About the program
Drexel University invites you to our Hip-Hop Summer Dance Intensive. This intensive is a unique one-week program of technique, theory and foundations for teaching Hip-Hop dance. The Program Director and creator Moncell Durden will be joined by master instructors Sabela Grimes and DeAndre Carol who will be teaching styles ranging from Hip-Hop social party dances, 70's social party dances, locking, top rocking, to popping, house, African, Latin and authentic social Jazz. The curriculum is both strenuous and rewarding, challenging dancers to refine technique and increase knowledge.

Program Format
The dance movement and lecture classes include a comprehensive historical and philosophical perspective on Hip-Hop dance. Students will review media, screen rare dance footage, and listen to music to experience first-hand the rhythms, moods, dynamics, and creative expression that informs what is now know as Hip-Hop dance.
Typical Schedule:
9:00-10:00: Warm up and Introduction to Hip-Hop Foundations
10:00-11:30: Movement Technique
11:30-1:00: Movement Technique
1:00-2:00: LUNCH
2:00-3:30: Theory class and video lab
3:30-5:00: Technique Class

General Information
Faculty:
Moncell Durden: Moncell “ill Kosby” Durden is a Philadelphia based choreographer, dancer, educator and dance historian. He is currently the Hip-Hop dance instructor for Drexel University's dance program. Moncell began his dance career performing with R&B and Rap acts of the 80's and 90's. He is a member of world-renown Hip-Hop dance crew Mop-Top Productions. Moncell's talent and knowledge has taken him to school and studios around the globe. He has a passion for sharing his knowledge and mastery of the Hip-Hop dance culture. He continues to work, teach and study the culture to become one of the foremost scholars of dance.
Sabela Grimes: d. Sabela grimes aka "ovasoul7" is a multi-disciplinary artist who passionately merges the elements of language, sound and movement. His dance workshops celebrate the history and traditions of African- American social dance, affirming that this language of movement, rich in innovations and African aesthetics has deep roots and a broader sense of purpose than we tend to acknowledge.
DeAndre Carrol: DeAndré Carrol is a choreographer, teacher, and performer specializing in dances of the African Diaspora including West African, Afro-Caribbean, and Hip Hop. He served as an assistant director, dancer, soloist, and contributing choreographer with the award-winning Harambee African Dance Ensemble of CU-Boulder for 6 years. With Harambee, DeAndré danced over 200 shows, and performed for President Bill Clinton (1995) and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (1998). DeAndré has also been a dance soloist with C+C Music Factory, taught collaborative workshops for the Colorado Dance Festival with the Philadelphia based Hip Hop company Rennie Harris Pure Movement and The African American Dance ensemble, as well as been a guest artist with Motion Underground.
Facilities: Drexel offers state-of-the-art dance studios.
Meal Plan: Drexel will provide you with lunch every day during your one-week program.
Health Services: You are required to submit proof of health insurance prior to the start of the program.
Housing: This is a commuter program therefore housing is not provided.

Registration
We welcome mature high school students, at least 16 years old, who have completed their sophomore year by July 2008. We encourage all enthusiastic students to apply. The application deadline is June 15th, 2008.
Apply by submitting the following items:
  • Completed registration form
  • A 300-word personal statement discussing your interest in dance and the summer program
A $1000 tuition fee should be included with your application. All applications will be reviewed upon completion and applicants will be notified on a rolling basis. Please note registration will not be complete until payment is received. Payment must be paid in full and received by Jun 15th, 2008.
Upon acceptance, we will mail an information package to you and your family with additional program information and, of course, more forms to complete. The $1000 payment will be credited towards the full tuition cost. Cancellations received in writing by June 15th will receive a full refund minus a $100 processing fee. Refunds will be processed approximately within 4 weeks. There will be no refunds for cancellations made after June 15th, 2008.

Tuition
The tuition of $1,000 includes:
  • One-week of technique classes and theory classes focused on the fundamentals of Hip-Hop dance
  • One lunch meal per day
  • Supplies and materials
  • Tuition does not include student health care coverage. All students must provide proof of insurance in order to enroll in the summer program
Our Degree Program: The dance major at Drexel University has a unique curriculum design and focus. Rather than focusing on training performers, this program combines rigorous academic coursework with extensive stage and studio dance experiences to prepare students for two possible career paths within dance, dance/movement therapy, and dance in education. Students participating in this major will earn a B.S. degree in dance with an optional minor in psychology.
