Liane Sorenson was the Minority Whip of the Delaware State Senate, a leadership post she had held since 2000. During her tenure, Sorenson sponsored legislation focused on the areas of domestic violence, health, genetic testing, education and finance. Prior to serving as a full-time legislator, Liane retired from the University of Delaware in 2003, serving as the Director of the Office of Women's Affairs and Executive Director of the Commission on the Status of Women. After earning Bachelors in Education and Masters in Counseling degrees from the University of Delaware (Phi Kappa Phi), she began her professional career as an elementary school teacher and served as counselor at the Battered Women’s Shelter and director of statewide parent education programs at CHILD, Inc.
Liane Sorenson’s professional leadership positions at the national level have included: Chair, American Association of Higher Education (AAHE) Women’s Caucus; Past President of the National Conference of State Legislatures' Women’s Network; and Criminal Justice Board, Council of State Governments. At the state level, Sorenson is a Past Chair of the Delaware Family Law Commission and currently serves as Chair of the Delaware Teen Dating Violence Task Force, created in 2009 by legislation she sponsored. Among her many honors and awards is her induction to the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women in 2007.
